Soya & Paraffin wax: SIX key differences

Four Scents Team

SIX DIFFERENCES

Scented candles are a beautiful gift to give and receive or a special indulgence as a well-deserved treat. But do you know what goes into your favourite scented candles and, depending on which one you choose, that lovely scent and pretty candle could actually be harming your home environment?
Traditionally, candles were made from paraffin wax. It was easy to source, and therefore low cost, and easy to work with, carry scent and mass produce candles. However, paraffin is a by-product of crude oil, not something you would ordinarily want in your home. And so an alternative type of candle arrived on the market, made from plant-based, non-toxic materials with the potential to be sustainable, eco-friendly and able to burn clean.
Soya wax was the front runner in this alternative candle choice and has a convincing set of reasons as to why all the candles you choose should be made from soya wax.

1. SOYA WAX IS BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

We know burning fossil fuels is not an environmentally friendly activity so by opting for soya wax candles, you are already making a small pledge to do your bit. Soy is a sustainable and renewable crop and one which needs never run out. If we need soy, we can grow it. Consequently, it won’t – or shouldn’t - be affected by price hikes. Additionally, as farming methods develop to conserve more water, fewer resources will be needed to grow the crops.

2. SOYA WAX CANDLES ARE BETTER FOR YOUR HEALTH

Back to the paraffin – consciously burning paraffin isn’t good for your health. Soya wax candles burn clean, leaving no residue in the air. For anyone with asthma or lung-related issues, soya wax candles won’t deposit harmful particles in your environment.

3. SOYA WAX CANDLES BURN LONGER

Working with soya wax is more time consuming than paraffin wax and therefore candles tend to cost more. However, they also burn slower for longer, meaning you get more life out of your candle. They do this because they have a higher melting point, so the wax melts more slowly, leaving you to enjoy your candle for longer.

4. SOYA WAX CANDLES RETAIN A BETTER SCENTS

The consistency of soya wax means it holds scents better than paraffin wax. It isn’t easy to balance a scent throughout a candle, and fragrances in candles often have phthalates added to help stabilise the smell, but they too are toxic. Through careful alchemy and using the highest quality ingredients, it is possible to create wonderful and natural scented candles.

5. SOYA WAX CANDLES CAUSE LESS DAMAGE IF SPLIT

We hope you never have an accident with a candle. But, should you spill wax on yourself it will hurt less than it if was paraffin wax, because soya wax has a higher melting point and it burns at a cooler temperature. (Please don’t try this at home.) It is also much easier to remove spilt wax from fabrics, just using soap and water.

6. SOYA WAX CANDLES AND FOUR SCENTS

The Four Scents range is made entirely from sustainably sourced eco-soya wax. They are 100% natural, vegan, botanical in origin and contain pure essential oils. We use naturally derived pure essential oils because they diffuse better through the wax and the scents are divine. All our candles are hand poured and carefully cured to allow the scents to flow through the candle.
