Patchouli oil is derived from the leaves of a herb that is part of the mint family. Most famous for being associated with the hippy generation, and called the “scent of the 60’s.” HISTORY OF PATCHOULI ESSENTIAL OIL Patchouli was prized long before it shot to prominence in the 60’s. Native to Southeast Asia, the Tamil people of South India first used and named the plant, meaning “green leaf”, using it for medicinal purposes and an insect repellent. It made its way to the Middle East via the Silk Route. High value inspired early European traders to exchange Patchouli for gold. Fabrics that were traded on the Silk Route were protected with the leaves of the plants, so its scent was synonymous with quality and the exotic, becoming a staple perfumery ingredient. Today, it’s also used in cosmetic products and detergents. BENEFITS OF PATCHOULI ESSENTIAL OIL - Enhances mood - Repels insects - Strengthens hair & skin How Does Patchouli Essential Oil Enhance Moods? Inhaling Patchouli’s grounding and calming scent encourages the release of dopamine and regulates serotonin, helping to combat negative emotions and low moods. A natural sedative, Patchouli is popular as an oil to encourage deep sleep and reduce restlessness. Its emotionally balancing qualities also improve focus, hence its popularity in meditation. Can Patchouli Essential Oil Repel Insects? Used since Ancient times for this purpose, Patchouli contains a powerful compound called patchoulol that emits a unique musky aroma that keeps mosquitoes, fleas, ants and moths at bay. This also gives Patchouli the ability to have a deodorising effect, as well as being able to help kill germs and fight fungus. Does Patchouli Essential Oil Strengthen Hair and Skin? Stimulating muscle contractions and hair follicles, Patchouli helps to prevent hair loss and promote growth. It balances sebum production, tackling oily scalps and adding a healthy sheen to hair, as well as helping to reduce dandruff. Patchouli encourages firmer skin and regeneration of new skin cells, but as well as benefiting dry and mature skin, it helps to balance oily and blemish-prone skin.
