Meaning “flower of flowers”, Ylang-Ylang oil is produced from the flowers of the tree native to tropical Asia. It is a renowned perfumery ingredient thanks to its complex scent.
Ylang-Ylang originated in Indonesia, from the Moluccan archipelago in the east, being used in folk medicine and skin creams for thousands of years. The oil was introduced in the 19th Century, being first distilled in the Philippines in 1860 by a German sailor, Albertus Schwenger. In the early 20th Century, when its medicinal properties were discovered by a French chemist, Ylang-Ylang was used as a remedy for typhus, malaria and intestinal infections. Today, it is popular in perfumery and continues to be used for its health-enhancing properties.

Does Ylang-Ylang Calm the Nervous System? 
Being used for centuries to promote calm, Ylang-Ylang has been discovered in studies to influence processes in the hippocampus region of the brain and the production of serotonin. It helps to soothe anxiety with its sedative effects, while also being gently uplifting. It helps counter poor sleep, shock and fatigue.
