Native to the tropical regions of Asia, Vetiver is a perennial grass, where the rootlets are distilled. Known as the “Oil of Tranquillity”, it is used in holistic medicine as well as a perfumery ingredient.

History: A medicinal remedy dating back to Ayurvedic times, Vetiver was used to treat headaches, loss of energy, muscle pain, hormonal imbalances, skin problems and fever. Also used in Chinese medicine to balance emotions, focusing and re-energising the body as well as easing negative feelings, gaining the nickname of the “miracle grass” across the continent of Asia. It was also used as an early form of air conditioning, where the grass was soaked and hung above doors to cool the hot air. In the Middle Ages, Vetiver was commonly used in perfumery that has been used in colognes sever since.

How Does Vetiver Benefit the Skin?
It effectively treats scars, stretch marks and burns by promoting regeneration of the skin and tissue. Vetiver’s antimicrobial properties help deeply cleanse and purify the epidermis. It helps to balance the secretion of sebum, so particularly beneficial for oily skin, as well as helping to treat blemishes. Vetiver is known to firm and tighten skin, protecting it against harsh environmental stressors.

Vetiver has the effect of stimulating the circulatory system and promotes oxygen. It also helps stimulate the production of red blood cells and so is beneficial for those suffering with anaemia. Its warming action extends to being an effective treatment for joint and muscles.

Traditionally used to treat sleeplessness, Vetiver’s deeply grounding fragrance encourages deeper, more restful breathing. By extension, Vetiver’s well-known sedative qualities this helps to treat a variety of negative emotions, such as anxiety, low mood, trauma and other stress-related conditions. It can also help treat fatigue and aid focus, memory and concentration.

APPLICATIONS
Note: Vetiver is a powerful fragrance, so is best used sparingly.
Aromatherapy – Add to a diffuser to encourage deep relaxation.
Massage – Add to a base oil to bring relief to pain and enhance circulation.
Skincare – Add to a base lotion or oil to help treat oily or blemish prone skin.
Insect Repellent – Add to a spray bottle with water and dish soap to help repel pests.
Candles and Soaps – A suitable base note for blends. Not much is needed – 1 or 2 drops will suffice.
